Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament about to finish second of three days of angling

Fishing Aug 20, 2021

Teams competing in the 18th annual Virginia Beach Billfish Tournament's second day of action are rapidly heading west from the Gulf Stream to report Friday' catches.

Only 29 boats out of the 81-team field fished Thursday's first day, with the Katherine Anne -
captained by Backlash Davis - leading the field with 7 white marlin, good enough for a 210-point lead over Builder's Choice (captained by Brent Gaskill) with 3 white marlin and one blue. Several boats came in with 3 white marlin.

Saturday's final day of fishing will feature 55 teams and they might be dealing with a little wave action provided by what is expected by then to be Hurricane Henri that is passing between Bermuda and the coast.

The National Weather Service is projecting some swells to top 8 feet towards day's end.

Of the 46 billfish caught on Day One, 41 were white marlin and 5 were blue.

Only 5 gamefish - 3 dolphin and 2 tuna - were caught.
