Gobble, Gobble, Gobble

Driving north on Backwoods Road, just south of the Virginia-NC border, something in the field to the left caught my eye.

With no one behind me, I slowed to a crawl and took in the view.

At least four dozen turkey working through a recently cut down soy bean field with no care in the world.

Hey, it's deer season ... right?

Well, that's only half true.

It's also fall turkey season and many a bird has saved a deer-less day in the woods - at least in Virginia. North Carolina doesn't have a fall turkey season

Virginia's current season in the southeastern portion of the state run through Monday.

I pulled over and got out of the truck, hoping to get a few pictures of the flock.

But, as turkey hunters know, these birds are crafty and smart and I could never get close enough for a picture with my phone-camera-pocket computer.

Still, I watched them for what seemed like an hour as they pecked away at what was left in the field, acting like they were as safe as could be.

And could it be that they knew it was deer season and they weren't on the minds of most hunter?

Makes you think, doesn't it?
